On May 31st this year, the PA SHPO (PA State Historic Preservation Office) released Pennsylvania’s new statewide historic preservation plan.  This plan, with a deliberate hashtag title of #PreservAtionHappensHere, outlines a set of goals that are focused on identifying and creating preservation outcomes in Pennsylvania.  #PreservAtionHappensHere is the idea that great preservation activities are happening every day across Pennsylvania however may not be thought of as historic preservation. We’d like to promote and share these positive preservation activities.  One of the many ways in which we are implementing this plan is through the Community Initiative awards.

This year’s Community Initiative awards will go to three recipients whose work embodies #PreservAtionHappensHere.  The Walk In Art Center has been selected because of the great work the organization has done to rehabilitate and revive the former shoe factory as well as their outreach and education work with the community of Schuylkill Haven and surrounding area.  We also believe that the Center can serve as a good model and case study for others, because the Center showcases the important connections between community, historic places, and people through art and local history.

This is the second year we are giving this award; the first was in 2016 for the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act.

PA SHPO Community Initiative awards will be given on Thursday, September 27th as part of Preservation Pennsylvania’s annual Historic Preservation Awards event at the State Museum in Harrisburg.
